Western Thuja 'Douglasii Pyramidalis'. Seeds. Thuja occidentalis 'Douglasii Pyramidalis'
Western Thuja 'Douglasii Pyramidalis'. as an ornamental plant has been introduced since 1871.
An evergreen tree with a narrow columnar crown that resembles a cypress.
The height of the tree is 10-15 m and the width is 2-3 m. In ten years, it will reach 2-3m in length and up to 1m in width.
Skeletal branches short, thin, level. Lateral branches are also short, densely spaced, cut like fern leaves. The needles are moss green in color.
Undemanding to light and soil conditions, it tolerates cropping well. It feels best in neutral to weakly acidic, light loamy or loamy soil with a soil reaction of pH 5.5-7.5.
When setting up plantings, it is preferable to mulch the beds with peat, bark mulch or some other organic material.
Decorative conifer variety. Suitable for urban landscaping. It is well suited for planting both in singles and in large groups in mixed beds together with other ornamental forms of conifers and in avenues.
Sowing: Thuja seeds are fairly easy to sprout and grow. It is best to sow the seeds in March. Then, by the end of summer, the seedlings will have gained strength and will be able to successfully overwinter.
First, the collected seeds are soaked for 24 hours in water.
Drain the water, dry the seeds on a napkin, mix them with wet sand, put them in a polyethylene bag and close the end. Place the bag in the refrigerator at 4 °C. It is important that the seeds do not dry out, so check them from time to time (they should be kept moderately moist).
The seeds can be sown after about eight weeks. It may happen that they start to germinate earlier, before the stratification period ends. In that case, sow immediately.
Acidic peat (pH 3.5) is filled in a pot or box, seeds are placed on top, and then covered with a layer of substrate a few millimeters thick. During germination, seeds are kept at room temperature and kept slightly moist. The seeds germinate in 2-3 weeks.
If there is a lot of space in the room, it is better to take a lot of pots and sow the seeds in them as rarely as possible. Then the small seedlings will not need to be pinched and they will take hold faster. If this is not possible, you can sow in a box and after germination, plant the plants in pots.
5 seeds in a pack.
