Sea buckthorn is an evergreen coniferous tree that usually reaches a height of up to 50 m. The diameter of the trunk is 1-1.5 m. The life of a tree is usually up to 400 years. Adult trees do not suffer in winter (can tolerate up to -25...-34 °C), but the shoots of young trees can be seriously damaged by late spring frost. Grows well in areas with permeable, moderately moist brown forest soils. also for brown podzolized soils. Fertile valleys and low hill slopes are preferred. It can tolerate drought, but grows very poorly in too wet soils.
The crown is thick and has a wide cone shape. In young trees it is grey, but in older trees it becomes darker and browner, as well as slightly mottled. The young shoots are yellow-brown, fluffy and veined. The needles are sharp, flat, 2.5-4 cm long, with two resin tubules. The male inflorescences are 10-15 mm long, reddish. Cones are 8-12 (14) cm long, with a diameter of 2.5-4 cm. They are green or purplish-green, but when ripe they are light brown, resinous, and the cotyledon is not visible. The seeds are 7-10 mm long. The cotyledon is 1.5 times longer than the seed coat.
