Found in the wild in eastern North America, from Nova Scotia to the Appalachian Mountains. Forms pure stands, or in swampy places, first mentioned in Latvia in 1883. F. Vāgner's commercial catalog.
Evergreen trees, up to 30 m high in their homeland, narrowly conical crown, bark gray-brown to red-brown, grooved, scaly. Branches short, thin, horizontally standing, young shoots light yellow-brown, covered with short hairs. Buds are decorative and beautiful. Red-brown, oblong-ovate, pointed tip, slightly resinous. Blooms late, only in early June, which gives this spruce additional decorativeness in the garden. Needles yellow-green to dark green, shiny, 10-15 mm long, blunt tip,
The red spruce feels good in the northern climate. Grows better in moist and acidic soils, less suitable for calcareous soils. Winter-hardy.
