Red maple grows in eastern North America in river valleys and swamps, forming mixed forests with other deciduous and coniferous trees, making it a very suitable tree to plant in wet areas.
Grows up to 20 m with a wide ovoid crown. Frost-resistant. Does not tolerate excessive drought, but tolerates short floods. Likes moderately wet, fertile, slightly acidic soils. Tolerates polluted air, grows in sunny to slightly shaded places.
Bark thin and dark gray. Shoots light red to olive green, shiny, with rare, brown surface ticking.
In autumn, the leaves turn yellow to bright red. Stem 5–10 cm long, reddish.
Flowers carmine red (may also be yellow), unisexual, arranged in shields. Blooms in April. Fruits are up to 2 cm long, attached at an acute angle to parallel, bright red when young.
Sow in autumn in pots, or allow the plant to undergo a light stratification in the refrigerator.
