Manchurian walnut. Walnut. Seeds. Nuts. Juglans mandshurica
Manchurian walnut is a great decoration in every garden. In autumn, it has fantastic bright yellow leaves.
The walnut tree has oblong or ovoid fruits, or nuts - with a pointed tip, hairy and sticky. The Manchurian walnut is winter-hardy - it withstands even 45 degrees of frost, freezing only in very severe winters, although in late frosts its young leaves and flowers may suffer.
The Manchurian walnut is very resistant to cold and can withstand frost down to -45 ° C.
Externally, the Manchurian walnut is quite remarkable. The crown of the tree is spread and somewhat resembles a ball. The color of the bark is almost dark gray, but the shade of the shoots is brown. Under natural conditions, the height of adult representatives of the culture can reach 30 m, and the life expectancy is high - up to 300 years. At the same time, the active growth of the tree continues only up to 80-90 years, after which the process slows down.
In the wild, the walnut tree grows in the Far East, in the lower reaches of the Amur, in the northern part of Manchuria, mainly in the alluvial plains and banks of river valleys, on hillocks, mainly in mixed deciduous forests, although it gets along well with pines and other conifers. In nature, it likes moist, fertile soils. Usually grows singly or in small groups.
The Manchurian walnut is a summer-green tree with a drooping, umbrella-like crown and strong branches. It has decorative dark gray or almost black, deeply furrowed bark.
The leaves are long and wide, with 9–19 elongated, elliptical, serrated leaflets; young ones are heavily hairy on both sides, later on the underside they develop many reddish-gray glands and star-shaped hairs. They bloom during the leaf unfolding. The male 10–30 cm long cylindrical spikes are extremely decorative. The female flowers are arranged in hairy inflorescences of 3–10. The nut is 4.5–6.5 cm long, matures and becomes edible in late September, October.
The tree grows very quickly, begins to bloom already at the age of 6–8 and produces many nuts.
Various parts of the walnut tree are also used in medicine, for example, fresh leaves are used to treat furunculosis by applying them to wounds; a very delicious and medicinal jam is made from the green fruits (nuts when they are not yet fully ripe, usually in June).
Walnut is good at cleaning the air from dust, as it contains the bactericidal substance juglone, which has the smell of iodine, so it is suitable for city gardens or areas near busy roads. The phytoncides secreted by walnut leaves also repel pests, such as mosquitoes; for this reason, walnut is also a good ally in a garden recreation area, plus it also provides shade, so over time it can be used as a natural arbor.
Walnut likes moisture, so in the first year you should try to keep the soil moist; water it 2-3 times a month, in the second and third years in the summer once a month will be enough. After watering, the soil should be loosened, weeds should be pulled out, and mulched. In the fourth year, the tree will bloom and can already produce.
It is advisable to feed young trees with phosphorus-potassium mineral fertilizer: this is done once during the growing season, best of all - during the fruit formation period (in June). The walnut tree will appreciate it if a glass of wood ash is added to the fertilizer, which is necessary for the normal development of the crop. Every year, a hole should also be dug around the tree in the area of the foliage. Adult trees can withstand short-term drought or temporary flooding of the root system. If the tree is properly cared for, it practically does not get sick and is not subject to pest attacks.
Growing a Manchurian walnut tree from seeds is easy. Nuts can be planted in a pot in the fall, slightly monitoring the soil moisture, and in the spring the first sprouts will please. Walnut can also be sown in the spring, but you need to monitor the moisture of the soil.
