Grows wild in the southeastern part of the USA on the banks of rivers and lakes, in wetlands and swamps from 0 to 160m, in hot climates it can reach a height of up to 50 m.
The height of the tree in normal northern conditions is 25-40m, with rare exceptions also higher. The trunk diameter is usually up to 3m, sometimes up to 5m. Bark is red-brown. In old trees, the bark peels off in ribbons. In moist soils, the roots above the ground form bottle-shaped growths. Needles are light green, in autumn red-brown. Cones are round, almost sessile, up to 3cm long, light brown.
The wood is light red-brown, mechanically very durable, not damaged by rot.
Undemanding to soil conditions, but feels best in a sunny location, in slightly acidic to acidic, moist, light loamy or sandy loam soil with a soil reaction pH of 4.5-7.5. When planting, it is advisable to mulch the plantings with acidic peat, bark mulch or some other organic material.
Decorative species. Suitable for park plantings. Well suited for planting separately in monocultures. Young trees should be protected from frost. The wood is used in woodworking.
