Beech. Fagus sylvatica. Tree seeds.
The European beech, formerly called the "red hornbeam", is a tree up to 30 m and more tall with a straight trunk and silver-gray bark; with broad, thick foliage, oval, slightly serrated or finely toothed, dark green and shiny above, lighter below leaves, whose autumn color is a drum-shaped yellow-red; with a three-sided, reddish-brown, shiny nut. The edges of the nut are very sharp, so care must be taken not to cut your hands. The nuts are used for food and they serve as food for various animals.
The wood is red and gives a lot of heat, so it is used as first-class firewood, of little use for buildings, but good enough for smaller household and agricultural tools, dishes and chairs, the bark gives a tannery, oil is pressed from the seeds in some places, but the fruits are very tasty for forest animals and birds.
Other trees and shrubs rarely grow under the trees, because they form dense crowns, thus creating strong shade. The beeches themselves are very shade-tolerant and can grow in the shade of other trees. This feature is used to create dense, wide, medium and high hedges. One of the rare deciduous trees used in cut hedges, which retains last year's, shiny brown leaves on the branches until spring, enhancing the demarcating effect.
Beech wood is dense, beautifully ornamented and valuable, it is used in the production of furniture, flooring, matches, household items, veneer and paper. The wood has virtually no specific smell. It is believed that almost every household has some beech item – a chopping board, a shelf or a frying pan spatula.
In good growing conditions, it can reach a height of up to 30 m and a trunk circumference of 5 m. The trees are relatively fast-growing, forming straight, monolithic, large trunks in forest stands, which is why there is interest in their wider use in forestry.
The seeds contain a nutritious oil, which is used in France for poultry fattening, frying and in oil lamps. The fallen leaves decompose slowly, but are a valuable mulching material for greenery. The peculiar, bristly and woody fruit bodies are often used in floristry.
Seeds are stratified (prepared for germination) for 2 to 5 months. Seeds can be sown both in a pot and directly in a permanent place, only then will it be necessary to take care of protecting the new shoots from forest animals.
The trees have a developed, superficial and sensitive root system. The good news is that the trees are not particularly damaged by pests or diseases and they are wind-resistant.
