Bog birch. Pubescens. Seeds.
Bog birch. Pubescens. Seeds.
Medium-sized (10-25 m) tree of the birch family.
Bark gray-white, smooth, often peeling in thin flakes, rarely cracked at the base only on older trees.
Does not form a typical canopy. Crown broad, branches erect.
Young branches tuftedly hairy, later glabrous.
Flowers in panicles, bloom when the leaves bloom.
Male panicles in panicles of 2-4, drooping (4-8 cm long), female panicles singly (2-4 cm long), initially erect, later drooping.
Leaves ovate, margin serrate, tip pointed, base rounded. Fruit - a winged nutlet, with the wings of the fruit approximately the width of the nut.
When the bracts and the bracteoles fuse, a three-lobed fruit bract is formed, with the middle lobe triangular.
Blooms in May.
Similar to the outdoor birch (B. pendula). It can be distinguished by the fact that it does not form a typical trunk (it does not), the bark is smooth (not cracking, sometimes black-creased), the leaves are ovate with a rounded base (not rhombic with a wedge-shaped or shallowly cordate base), the branches are erect (not drooping), usually does not grow in dry places (outdoor birch is often found in dry places), there are never warty glands on the young branches.
Sowing:
Soak the seeds in warm water for 24 hours.
Stratify for 60 days.
After stratification, sow on the surface of the soil (press the seeds). The soil should be constantly moist, but not wet.
Light is needed for germination! Protect from direct sunlight.
You can cover the nursery with a transparent film - it will retain moisture and heat. Be sure to remove it when the seeds begin to germinate.
Germinate at room temperature in a well-ventilated place, away from drafts and direct sunlight.
You can also sow the seeds in prepared soil in the fall. In this case, stratification is not required. Mulch, protect from rodents. Seeds germinate in spring or early summer. Do not let the soil dry out, protect from direct sunlight.
3 seeds per package.
