Bare horse chestnut. Seeds.
The tree grows in the east of North America, on the banks of rivers, but it also feels great in the north.
6-12 m tall evergreen trees. Relatively hardy. Prefers deep, acidic, moist soils. Grows in sunny places.
Young shoots hairy, later glabrous. The leaves have 5 leaflets with short petioles. The leaves are elliptic to inverted ovate, up to 18 cm long and 7 cm wide, with a finely toothed margin, hairy on the underside, later glabrous.
Flowers pale yellow-green, up to 20 cm long spikes. Blooms in June. The fruits are almost smooth, with soft outgrowths that shrink as the fruit matures.
The seeds contain acids and are poisonous. Tannin is obtained from the seeds, which is used in leather processing. Decorative plant.
Sowing. Sow chestnuts in early spring in March, in pots. The moisture level in the soil should be carefully monitored.
Chestnuts do not tolerate transplanting well, so it is better to sow each chestnut in a larger pot, separately, to reduce transplanting.
