Balsam fir. Abies balsamea. Seeds.
Balsam fir is very popular, not only in gardens, but also as a Christmas decoration.
Very beautiful cones, and if it is not overgrown, it also forms a beautiful compact shape that will delight all year round.
The needles stay on the branches for four to seven years, are very resinous and aromatic. In turn, the cones are oval-cylindrical, up to 10 cm long, and 2–2.5 centimeters in diameter. In spring, they are a beautiful dark purple color, which gives the tree a very decorative appearance. In autumn, the cones acquire a gray-brown hue, are very resinous; they mature and fall off in October.
Balsam fir has a superficial root system, you need to choose a place for the new seedling carefully, because if you want to transplant the tree, it must be accustomed to being buried. The plant does not respond well to soil compaction and branch pruning, is shade-tolerant, and grows relatively quickly. The average lifespan of a tree is 200 years.
Despite its relative drought resistance, balsam fir loves regular watering, including weekly crown spraying in the summer season. It should also be noted that due to its superficial root system, the tree is not very stable, and a strong wind can topple it or at least injure it.
Balsam fir can grow up to 22 m, reaching a width of 6 m.
