Its name in Russian "бархат" the second translation is velvet - royal and expensive fabric. The dual translation of the name perfectly describes this tree. It seems that there is no other tree that can boast such bark as cork - ash-gray, thick, warm, soft and so pleasant when you slide your hand over it.
Cork trees are the ones from which bottle corks are made, many and various interior items and objects, but only Amur cork is among the 50 most important medicinal plants used in traditional Chinese medicine.
It is a large tree with a low, wide crown. The leaves are somewhat similar to ash leaves, composed of 5-13 ovate or lanceolate leaflets with a glossy top and a bluish-green underside. Blooms in May - June. Flowers are yellow-green, arranged in spikes. The young leaves, flowers and fruits have a distinctive, lemon-like scent.
In autumn, the leaves acquire a beautiful - bright yellow hue, which even shimmers slightly in the autumn twilight.
It is best to plant it in a solitary place, giving it a sufficiently large space. Its picturesque crown will become an element of a spacious landscape. It will be an excellent tree - a shade giver.
The Amur cork tree is fast-growing and very long-lived - it can reach the age of 300 years. And, of course, its special trump card is the expressive bark of the tree.
