Warty birch. "Yongi". Seeds.Betula pendula 'Youngii'
Warty birch. "Yongi". Seeds.
The species has been known in England since 1873.
An evergreen tree with an umbrella-shaped crown. The tree has no central trunk, the main branches are horizontal and bend back. The lateral branches are thin and long.
A modest, delicate tree. It is propagated only by grafting. The height of the tree can be very different when sowing from seeds.
Birches are not demanding plants, but they like to grow best in loose, humus-rich soil, but this tree is unpretentious and will accept any other soil, but it needs a lot of light.
Birches do not need pruning. In late winter and early spring, birch has very strong sap flow, so it should not be pruned during this period, since then it will lose a lot of sap and die.
If the need to prune birch does arise, the best time for this is June.
No special fertilizers are required either during planting or after.
Sowing:
Soak the seeds in warm water for 24 hours.
Stratify for 60 days.
After stratification, sow on the soil surface (press the seeds). The soil should be constantly moist, but not wet.
Light is needed for germination! Protect from direct sunlight.
You can cover the nursery with transparent film - it will retain moisture and heat. Be sure to remove it when the seeds begin to germinate.
Germinate at room temperature in a well-ventilated area, away from drafts and direct sunlight.
You can also sow the seeds in prepared soil in the fall. In this case, stratification is not required. Mulch, protect from rodents. Seeds germinate in spring or early summer. Do not allow the soil to dry out, protect from direct sunlight.
