Smoketree. European wigwood. Continus cocgygria. Ornamental shrub Seeds.
The common wig tree (Cotinus coggyria) is a small tree or more often a medium-sized shrub that grows wild in the Mediterranean countries, the Caucasus, and the Middle East.
The plant has excellent decorative fruits - silvery pink hairs that form in September and that from afar resemble a wig, from which the tree's name also comes from.
In Latvia, it more often grows as a 2-3 meter tall shrub or small tree with a rounded crown. The wig tree is very easy to shape, which is an additional plus for choosing this plant. It will also fit into a small garden, as a bright accent.
Flowers are greenish-yellow in 15-30 cm long panicles. The leaves turn carmine-red, orange-pink in autumn. Plant in sunny places, in dry, drained, moderately fertile soils. Lovers of heat and light. Tolerates city conditions well. Winter-hardy, however, in the eastern part of Latvia, in harsher winters, it can also freeze.
If the tops freeze, the bush will not bloom. The small flowers are formed on two-year-old shoots.
The wig tree will fit into any garden, because it is not large and does not require special care. The main thing is to provide a sunny, warm place. It should not be planted in an open, windy place. The plant can be planted both in groups and as a solitary.
Sowing:
Sprinkle the seeds with hot water and soak for 12 hours.
Mix with wet vermiculite or sterile sand, pour into an airtight bag. Stratify (keep in the cold at approx. - 4 degrees Celsius) for 30 days.
After stratification, sow in soil, which should be constantly moist, but not wet.
The nursery is covered with a film, which must be removed when the seeds begin to germinate.
Germinate at room temperature in a well-ventilated place, away from drafts and direct sunlight.
You can also sow the seeds in prepared soil in the fall. In this case, stratification is not required.
Mulch, protect from rodents. Seeds germinate in spring or early summer. Do not let the soil dry out, protect from direct sunlight.
